Lana Del Rey-First Light

Well, the rumors and leaks were true all along, Lana Del Rey performs the theme for First Light, which shares it’s title with that of the games, and I’m blown away.

As if Lana, who has been a popular name to throw around when discussing potential theme singers for quite some time, was not enough of a pleasant surprise, THE David Arnold also helped compose the incredibly catchy tune.

Arnold is no stranger to the franchise, having composed the soundtracks for four Bond films, from TWINE through QOS, and it is clear that he knew what kind of sound a Bond song would need, and that this is a skill he hasn’t lost.

The song itself is great. It features an epic instrumental paired with Lana’s lyrics in which she not only talks about whether or not you’ll “play your life like a game”, but quite literally ends the song with the words “will you play?”

The several uses of the words play and game make the song have an almost meta element to it, one that is enough to make the song a bit cheeky without taking you too far out of it or seeming like it is trying too hard to be self aware.

She also mentions how Bond’s youth is his strength, and multiple times sings about the idea of running towards the sun, a reference to the story of Icarus. Lana even brings up the fates, adding another element borrowed from Greek mythology to the lyrics of the song. Hey, maybe the wearer of the golden mask, which has a wreath of leaves molded on it, is named King Midas.

As I said, the song ends with a more hushed “Will you play?” before the instrumental fades, and I can already see the moment the games title appears on the screen as she mutters the words before we are brought to the main menu, or the following scene in the game. The quality of the song, which to me is one of the most important aspects of anything Bond related, is phenomenal, and it once again makes me even more ripe with excitement for the games release next month.

What are your thoughts on the song? Let me know below!
